The story follows two sisters, Avni and Isha, on a journey where they are seeking all the places that stories live – a search prompted by a gift from their Masi (auntie in Gujarati). It’s a celebration of how stories connect us to our communities, the natural world, family, cultures, and each other. And it’s an invitation to honor stories with our attention and to actively seek the stories that live within us and beyond us.

Even after years of working on it, it doesn’t feel finished until it’s in the hands of kids. So today I’m celebrating the chance to get it in front of kids and hear about where they look for stories and what stories they are finding in this world of ours.

Praise for Where Do Stories Live?

★ “A warm, beautifully illustrated picture book that guides young readers to discover that stories are everywhere: around us, within us, and woven through our cultures and families.” —School Library Journal, starred review

“Sure to spur wonder and contemplation—and to inspire young writers.” —Kirkus Reviews

“This gentle picture book is perfect for a lapsit. A wonderful addition to collections looking to highlight not just the stories in books, but those that are all around us.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“The book achieves one of the highest purposes of children’s literature: making the specific—Minnesotan coneflowers or a Gujarati wedding photo—feel universal, and the small—a spring wildflower or a mama’s hug—feel big.” --Minnesota Monthly

There are so many people behind making a book, and I feel incredibly grateful to have gotten to create this one with the incredible team at Kokila/Penguin. A special thank you to editor Zareen Jaffery and art director Jasmin Rubero for all of their brilliant ideas, thought-provoking questions, and the warmest encouragement that a squishy hearted artist could ask for. The most heartfelt thank you to my truly wonderful agent Lilly Ghahremani for seeing something in the very early stages of this story, for believing in it from the beginning, and for helping it become what it is. And thank you to publicist Abby Synnes for planting the seeds to get this book out there. Every person who touched this book over the years had a hand in shaping it.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported my book and art journey in so many ways over my life (some of you have been here since the very beginning of my book journey!). My sincerest gratitude to you all. I hope you feel all the love that went into making this book and that it makes you feel connected to each other and our wider world.

I’ll be sharing more about the book along with the behind the scenes process in the coming months, but for today I’m thrilled to celebrate getting to share this book with you all.
